Most business owners often wonder “How will I ever get followers on Twitter? Is anyone really interested in my business? How can complete strangers follow my business on Twitter?”

These are all valid questions but the truth is you can start getting followers within hours of opening your Twitter account. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. First of all complete your profile – this provides the foundation for people to trust and like you. Make sure all the important parts of your profile are in place such as your image, profile description, website links, location and background

2. Start Tweeting- write a few tweets before you start following people. You would not want people to link to your profile and find you have no content as that would decrease your chances of getting any followers. You can write up to 5 tweets spaced out during the day with content ranging from tips, information, links to useful content, coupons or just letting people know you are new to Twitter.

3. Start following people- the key to getting followers is to be a follower yourself. Twitter actually gives you suggestions on who to follow or you can choose from the categories listed to choose people in a related niche to your business. For example if you are a restaurant owner, you would obviously choose the food and drink category.
Another way of choosing who to follow is looking up the well-known figures in your niche and following them and their followers. For example, if you run a basketball sporting agency, you would find the popular basketball players on Twitter and click ‘follow’ on their profile and those of their followers.
To avoid getting into trouble with Twitter, try and follow no more than around 100 people per day otherwise you will appear as a spammer or automated robot. Also, you should space out the times when you follow people and not do it all at once. So try and follow 30 people in the morning, 30 more in the afternoon and 40 at night. This makes it appear more natural to Twitter. Keep doing this daily for about 2 weeks.

4. Wait for a response- the wonderful thing about Twitter is that once you follow people and keep tweeting valuable content, people will start following you back. Very soon you will notice that your follower count will keep increasing every time you log into your Twitter account. It’s always best to thank people for following you back so write a note to them and also respond personally to anyone who has sent you a direct message or have retweeted your tweets. This improves your public relations with your followers.
